SUMMARY:October Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Join KCCCU at Ray’s Boathouse for our quarterly luncheon on October 8. Bruce Barcott will be sharing about how credit unions are working with legal cannabis companies as well as recent legislation on banking for these businesses. \n11:30 – 12:00: Networking\n12:00 – 12:15: Lunch\n12:15 – 1:00: Program begins \nRemember to bring your business cards for networking and prizes! \nBanking on CBD\, Hemp\, and Cannabis: A Fast-Changing Landscape \nFor the past six years\, a number of credit unions in legal cannabis states have been quietly working with state-licensed cannabis companies to offer them basic account services. It’s not been easy. These accounts require onerous upkeep\, documentation\, and oversight. Credit union officials often do it out of a sense of community service and public safety. \nOver the past few months\, Congress and national regulatory agencies have signaled a willingness to step into a new era in banking these problematic businesses. Senate Banking Committee chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) recently gave the SAFE Banking Act a hearing after years of ignoring the proposal. Last December\, Congress legalized the cultivation and sale of hemp via a special clause in the 2018 Farm Bill. That opened the door for this year’s boom in the CBD industry\, as CBD can be extracted from hemp. In August\, the NCUA released an interim guidance stating that credit unions may provide certain financial services to legally operating hemp businesses. \nHow does hemp differ from cannabis? What are “certain” financial services? What’s the likely timeline for Congressional banking reform in the cannabis sector? Why should a credit union consider building relationships with hemp or cannabis companies now\, instead of waiting for full federal legalization? Bruce Barcott will dive into these issues and ask your toughest and most embarrassing questions about cannabis in this fascinating lunchtime discussion. \n\nAbout Bruce Barcott\nBruce Barcott is a Guggenheim Fellow and author of Weed the People: The Future of Legal Marijuana in America. A nationally recognized journalist\, Barcott’s provocative thoughts\, ideas\, and observations on prohibition’s end–the good and the bad–have made him one of the nation’s most sought-after writers and speakers on this dramatic turn in American history. For the past four years he’s directed daily coverage of national cannabis news for Leafly\, the world’s largest and most trusted legal cannabis information site. \nIn his writing and public events\, Barcott questions and considers the moral\, legal\, ethical\, political and financial implications of legalization. “This is one of the most exciting about-faces in recent American history\,” he says\, “and it has profound lessons to teach us about taboos\, assumptions\, evidence\, prejudice\, mistakes\, and the factors that lead people to change their minds.” Barcott wrote the Time Magazine special issue\, “Marijuana Goes Main Street\,” and has been quoted in newspapers around the nation in addition to appearing on MSNBC’s “The Docket” and “The Cycle\,” National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition\,” KING-TV’s “Evening Magazine\,” WJLA (Washington DC) “NewsTalk\,” KGO and KCBS radio in San Francisco\, KPBS’ “MidDay” in San Diego\, KUOW’s “Weekday” in Seattle\, and on many other media outlets. \nBarcott’s previous award-winning books include The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw and The Measure of a Mountain: Beauty and Terror on Mt. Rainier. His cover stories and feature articles appear regularly in The New York Times Magazine\, National Geographic\, Time Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, Outside\, and other national publications. As a science writer for more than twenty years\, Barcott has covered topics ranging from global warming to risk calculus to the science of camouflage. He led National Geographic’s coverage of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill\, and accompanied James Cameron’s 2012 expedition to dive the deepest spot in the ocean\, the Mariana Trench in the South Pacific. He lives on Bainbridge Island\, across the water from Seattle\, with his wife\, the memoirist Claire Dederer\, and their two children.

SUMMARY:March Luncheon (Rescheduled from February)
DESCRIPTION:**Date Change\, due to weather** \nJoin KCCCU at Ivar’s Salmon House on Lake Union on March 20 (rescheduled from February 13) to hear from Adam Utley and Aaron Schmookler from Yes Works. They’ll be presenting Sales: Building Relationships\, Rapport\, Loyalty\, and Business. Remember to bring your business cards for the networking portion! \n11:30 – 12:00: Networking\n12:00 – 12:15: Lunch\n12:15 – 1:00: Program begins \nYou may have found… Traditional forms of sales training — on their own — don’t yield the results you need.\n•	When your process is right\, but your results are wrong…\n•	When the bulk of your sales team is way behind the top performers…\n•	When you’re not getting the repeat business you deserve…\nIt’s time to stop training for process alone\, and start training for mindset.\nOur Adeptability mind-shift training for sales teams can ignite the skills and training they’ve already got. Sales processes gain power within a context of confidence\, trust\, and authenticity. \nTacoma Portrait Photography – Petersen Pictures \nAaron Schmookler had his first article on creativity and innovation published at the age of eleven\, when the editor of a parenting magazine noticed his innovative mindset and asked him to write about taking inspiration for play wherever you can find it. The inspired mindset that got him noticed as a child still motivates and excites him — so much so that he’s made a career of sharing it with others. It’s contagious. So is the passion for finding the intersection between play and innovation\, and helping people live and work there. Inspiration is everywhere.\nA love of collaboration and of excellence in communication has driven Aaron to build teams and nurture creativity. After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Oberlin College\, Aaron began work in the corporate world\, gaining appreciation for his ability to communicate\, to innovate\, and to find the opportunity for constructive change in every crisis.\nBusinesses and organizations large and small\, public and private have used Aaron’s support to improve communication\, increase innovation\, and manage conflict on both coasts\, even while he earned his MFA in Theater from UMASS. Once\, he thought his business work and his theater work were separate\, but he’s learned since that they are one and the same.\n“Every team has genius at work. Only the best encourage and inspire the genius to emerge.” \n____________________ \n\nAdam Utley\, as a co-founder of The Yes Works\, has directed his 16 years of Improvisation experience towards helping businesses\, large and small\, solve the problems they think can’t be solved. Since graduating from Pacific Lutheran University in 2004\, Adam has found that no matter what the setting\, a regular practice of Improvisation habit gives people the confidence to synthesize their own ideas with the ideas of others. Together\, in that way\, they attain a height greater than they imagined. Having the audacity to value your own brilliance with the genius of the people around you is in your best interest.\nRegardless of age or profession\, the intention is the same; to nurture creative connections that engage self-education–connections grounded in empathy and a sense of one’s self. When these things come together\, a company culture forms that’s conducive to great work ethic\, employee retention\, and stellar work product.\nAdam has proven and will continue to prove his investment in the nuances of making Improvisation habit accessible to all human brains\, regardless of profession.\n“It’s never about the thing\, it’s always about the relationship.”
